Abstract

This paper presents findings from a process evaluation conducted in a prison-based substance abuse program in Kentucky. The purpose of a process evaluation is to provide a comprehensive description of how a program is conceptualized, planned, implemented, modified, and terminated. This paper discusses key components in the Substance Abuse Program (SAP), including a detailed program description, modifications in planned treatment strategies, program documentation, and perspectives of program staff and clients. Findings from this initial process evaluation indicate that prison based programs have the potential to work for those who are committed to recovery. Discussion regarding program accomplishments and implications for modifications are reviewed.
