Abstract

A set of 60 coated graphite armor/limiter tiles has been fabricated and installed in the Doublet III tokamak device. A material investigation/ process control study was conducted during production coating of these tiles with a two-phase carbon-SiC material by chemical vapor deposition in a fluidized bed of particles. The 60 coated tiles of POCO AXF-5Q, which were 10 cm × 10 cm × 1 to 2.5 cm in size, were incorporated in a limiter/beam armor panel array on the inboard wall in Doublet III. The results of the coating process control examinations, both nondestructive and destructive types, are reported and represent the technical data base for composition, quality, thickness, and uniformity for production coating runs with this process.
