Abstract

This chapter covers process control systems, the different types of variation and how they affect the process output, and control charts and their use. Process control is an effective prevention strategy to manufacture products that meet the requirements of the customer. There are four elements of process control systems: the process, information about performance, action on the process, and action on the output. Assignable causes due to a change in manpower, materials, machines, or methods, or combination of these, can cause the process to go out of control. Control charts investigated to identify in-control and out-of-control processes and detect common causes and special causes of the out-of-control state. A high average outgoing quality (AOQ) indicates a high defective count, and therefore a poor quality level. The chapter also covers what is meant by a process being in statistical process control and process capability and its various indices and their applications.
