Abstract

Volume 26 of the AFIPS Conference Proceedings is a permanent record of the papers presented at the 1964 Fall Joint Computer Conference. Part I, called AFIPS I, was distributed at the Conference; this book, which is Part II, hence AFIPS II, includes information which, because of its nature and timeliness, could not be made available for publication prior to the time of the Conference. This departure from the usual pattern of a single volume for the Conference Proceedings reflects the unique character of the sessions whose papers comprise the major portion of this book. In recent Conferences, computer systems have been described in bits and pieces, and properly so. The technical programs were carefully organized to avoid inclusion of material which might have had other than technical interest or motivations. Furthermore, since technical sessions are generally organized around particular areas of specialization, only those specific features of new computer systems which were within the specialty area and which were intrinsically of interest could be presented. This approach, it is believed, is proper and should be maintained, but it has the effect of eliminating overall descriptions of computer systems, as often presented at earlier Joint Computer Conferences.
