Abstract

SMRM 1992 in Berlin will be remembered as the year when many magnetic resonance (MR) scientists had a metaphorical rush of blood to the head! Much excitement was generated by the promise of MR as a real time, high resolution functional imaging device which can rival PET. The method is heaven sent for companies developing very high field (3–4 Tesla) systems and real time imaging as the effect is stronger at higher field strength and requires accurate motion/flow control. In the light of this new area of interest, some of the major manufacturers were showing WIP developments in gradient driver technology which will allow a leap forward in gradient strength and rise time (3–4 times better than current specifications) using whole body coils.
