Abstract

The International Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering and Measurement (ESEM) is one of the most important forums for presentation of empirical research in Software Engineering. ESEM's 6th installment will take place in Lund, Sweden, on the 19th and 20th of September 2012. This year there were 95 full papers, 60 short papers and 4 posters submitted to the conference, of which 24, 19 and 4 were accepted, respectively. These accepted papers cover a broad range of topics related to empirical studies. There are both papers presenting the results of empirical studies, and papers about empirical research methodology. In addition to the research papers, there are also two keynote speeches. Prof. Mark Harman will talk about search-based software engineering, a truly empirical discipline, which he has founded. The Bishop of Lund, Dr. Antje Jackelén will talk about using metaphors to visualize the invisible; how metaphors and symbols are used in theology, and how they can be used in Science and Engineering. The ESEM conference will be held as part of the annual Empirical Software Engineering International Week (ESEIW), which, in addition to ESEM, includes the ISERN meeting (International Software Engineering Research Network), the International Doctoral Symposium on Empirical Software Engineering (IDoESE), the IASESE Advanced School (which this year will focus on Evidence Synthesis of Qualitative Research), and three co-located conferences/workshops (MetriSec, PROMISE and EAST).
