Abstract

Welcome to the 2012 ACM SIGGRAPH Symposium on Interactive 3D Graphics and Games! This year's symposium is being held March 9--11 in Costa Mesa, Orange County, California. I3D 2012 marks the 16th meeting of the symposium. Ever since its first meeting 26 years ago, I3D has been a vibrant, stimulating, and collegial meeting place for researchers, practitioners, students, and enthusiasts in the area of interactive computer graphics techniques. Along the way, I3D has evolved along with the field of interactive graphics. It has grown from a workshop held every other year into an annual symposium, and it has broadened its scope in several areas, including computer games. The I3D 2012 symposium is, for the first time, collocated with IEEE Virtual Reality 2012 and the IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interface 2012. We hope that this provides ample opportunity for sharing ideas and technologies between these three communities in which interactive graphics techniques play a central role. These proceedings present 25 papers selected by a rigorous peer review process from amongst 63 submitted papers. Over the years I3D has acquired an enviable reputation for high quality and timeliness of the content selected for presentation. We are pleased to continue to excel in that fine tradition this year as well. We thank all authors for submitting their work for presentation at I3D, and we commend the authors of the selected papers for contributing their efforts, insights, and ideas for presentation at I3D. Each submitted paper was reviewed by 3--4 of the 77 members of the International Program Committee, assisted by 3 external reviewers. The review process was followed by extensive online discussions where the program committee members carefully weighed the relative merits of each paper. Several committee members volunteered even more of their time to help shepherd conditionally accepted papers. We would like to thank all reviewers for their care and diligence. During this process, we have read many detailed and carefully written reviews, followed by much thoughtful discussion. It is a testament to the strong community that supports and participates in the I3D symposium.
