Abstract

The Sixth International Research and Development in Information Retrieval Conference is being held at a site of major importance in the evolution of Information Storage and Retrieval Systems. The National Library of Medicine has been recognized as a leader in the development of operational systems for almost two decades. It is fitting that participants of this conference discuss the many new challenges of intelligent systems, innovative technologies, and massive restructuring of communication networks in the same setting where many of the decisions were made which nurtured this field. The cooperation of the Gesellschraft fur Informatik, the Information Retrieval Group of the British Computer Society, and the American Society for Information Science as well as the Sponsorship of the Association for Computing Machinery may indicate the growing recognition of the importance of "information" problems on both a national and international level. The speakers on this program represent at least eight countries and the conference participants are even more diversified. Continuing international cooperation of the type represented by this conference is important for the development of mutually beneficial research. At a minimum, it helps our understanding of the research opportunities and the dissemination of results and theories. It is our sincere hope that these activities will continue to increase in spite of the growth of national possessiveness about information.
