Abstract

It is our great pleasure to welcome you to the 3rd ACM SIGMM International Workshop on Social Media -- WSM'11. Since the first workshop in 2009, WSM has become an annual forum for the presentation of research results and experience reports on cutting-edge issues of social media research, including models, systems, applications, and theory. The mission of this workshop is to give researchers and practitioners a unique opportunity to share their novel ideas, methods and techniques that address the emerging challenges of social media research, and to identify new directions for future research and development. The call for papers this year attracted 22 submissions from Europe, Asia, and the United States. Among them, the program committee accepted 10 papers which cover a variety of topics, such as social media content analysis, event identification, collaborative photo sharing, social video concept detection, tag suggestion, location analysis, map discovery from social photos, display of social live streams, social media recommendation, and so on. In addition, the program this year includes two keynotes by researchers from both academia and industry, including "Mining Social Media - Issues and Challenges" by Prof. Huan Liu from Arizona State University, and "Largescale Social Media Analysis in Facebook" by Dr Rong Yan from Facebook Inc. We hope that these proceedings will serve as a valuable reference for social media researchers and developers.
