Abstract
Welcome to the International Symposium on High-Performance Parallel and Distributed Computing (ACM HPDC 2021)! HPDC is the premier conference at the intersection of high-performance and distributed computing, now in our 30th year. One of the distinctive qualities of HPDC is that it features a mix of ideas, ranging from applied research in the form of experience papers on operational deployments and applications, and more fundamental research in parallel and distributed techniques and systems. The ACM HPDC 2021 program is no exception and provides a great window into state of the art and the state of the practice in the high-performance computing field. Addressed topics include reliability, scalable computation, fairness and performance, and hybrid and cloud systems. We received 92 submissions, out of which 19 were accepted. Two best paper award candidates were also selected. The best paper is to be announced during the ACM HPDC 2021. We thank all of the authors who submitted their work to HPDC for allowing us to assemble a high-quality program. The review process consisted of two phases. In the first phase, all submitted papers were reviewed by at least three TPC members. Based on the reviews of the first phase, 58 papers were moved to the second phase. In the second phase, two additional TPC members and, in a few cases, an additional external expert reviewer, were assigned to each paper. Before the online TPC meeting, all members engaged in detailed online discussions. All of the second phase papers were discussed at the two-day TPC meeting, held online on March 23-24, 2021. The meeting was attended by most TPC members and the two program co-chairs at different times. Despite the globally distributed TPC, we manage to discuss all papers with most reviewers live, hear all opinions, and reach a decision with consensus for virtually every paper.
