Abstract
SIGGRAPH 2011 offers a record amount of game development content with courses, talks (technical, studio, and exhibitor) along with workshops on game development, as well as game and technical papers. In addition, game content can again be found in the Computer Animation Festival, in which Real-Time Live! showcases the latest trends and techniques in games. And for those wanting a hands-on experience, the Sandbox provides the ideal environment to test drive the latest in interactive entertainment. The Game Papers explore key issues in video games, inform and substantively advance our current state of knowledge and understanding, and foster new areas for investigation that will drive the next generation of design and player experience. And we have two strong panels for the Games Paper track, one focused on "Analyzing Player Behavior and Experience" and the other on "Players and Game Worlds." We noticed trends in submissions this year with more attention being paid to independent games and player-generated content. Real-Time Live! is again a part of the Computer Animation Festival. An international jury selected submissions from several areas, including games, animation, performance, and visualization. Real-Time Live! is the premiere showcase for the latest trends and techniques for pushing the boundaries of interactive visuals. And after seeing the live presentations from the artists and engineers responsible for the work, and the Sandbox is setup to allow SIGGRAPH attendees to try these projects hands-on for themselves. The industry just beginning to see how to balance multiple levels of interactivity to deliver a rewarding experience that sits comfortably between storytelling and retaining an immersive experience. The plethora of content focused around game development in courses, talks, workshops and technical papers highlights an important trend with the growing convergence of techniques between film and games - there is a lot to learn from the film industry and vice-versa.
