Abstract

The Outgoing Council Meeting of the Paleontological Society (PS) was called to order by President William I. Ausich on 1 November 2003 at 19:00 hrs in the Douglas Room of the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. Attending were Council members Patricia H. “Tricia” Kelley, David J. Bottjer, Mark E. Patzkowsky, Carl W. Stock, Steven M. Holland, Mark A. Wilson, Russell D. “Tim” White, Dale A. Springer, Ann F. “Nancy” Budd, Jonathan M. Adrain, William A. DiMichele, Alycia L. Rode, Christopher J. Crow, Scott M. Ritter, Rex A. Hanger, and Thomas Olszewski. Danita Brandt, Peter J. Harries, and Roger D. K. Thomas were also present. Bill Ausich presented the President's report. He first thanked the many people who served the PS in the past year, who were leaving their positions, including members of Council and of various PS committees. Ausich then made a series of announcements. He has resisted participating in the Council of Scientific Society Presidents' meeting, an expensive activity. The American Geological Institute (AGI) careers brochure is complete, and a copy of it will be included with our journals. The PS is now a “Tier I” supporter of Paleontologia Electronica. He thanked the Mid-America Paleontology Society for their contributions of $2,000 for the Gould Student Grant Fund, and $100 toward the Harrell Strimple Award Fund. The paleontology initiative started by the National Park System appears dormant. Colin Sumrall will represent the PS at a workshop at the Florida State Museum on the “Decadal Vision of Taxonomy and Natural History Collections.” President Ausich and Mark Patzkowsky will attend a workshop on the “Teaching of Paleontology in the 21st Century.” Mark Patzkowsky presented the Treasurer's report. Total assets at the end of 2002 were $1,594,872, a decrease of $54,944 from 2001. Income for 2002 was $470,440, and expenses were $431,586. He pointed out …
