Abstract
National statistics predict that each one of us, during our lifetime has a one-in-50 chance of being killed in an automobile and a one-in-14 chance of being permanently disabled from an auto accident. Every week 1,000 Americans are killed as a result of auto accidents, while 10,000 of us each day suffer auto-related injuries. The problem has obviously reached epidemic proportions, and since 1957, an everincreasing group of physicians known as the American Association for Automotive Medicine has been meeting to study the problem and come up with meaningful solutions. The 1967 meeting was sponsored by the Wills Eye Hospital, having been organized by its director, Dr. Arthur Keeney. Participants ranged from internists, to ophthalmologists, to automotive and safety engineers, to racing car drivers.
