Abstract

With different endocrine measures remissions may be brought about in 30% of cases of advanced breast cancer. Remissions seen after ablative procedures are best. However, average survival of the 70% of nonresponders is short, especially if the therapy is adrenalectomy. Several techniques to predict response have been investigated. There is correlation between uptake of tritiated estradiol by the tumor tissue in vitro and the response to endocrinetherapy, but this test is not for routine use. Correlation between the presence of receptors in breast cancer tissue and a favorable response to adrenalectomy or other endocrine treatments has been demonstrated. As a first treatment nafoxidine can produce remissions but it prevents effectiveness of a second therapy with estrogens. A successful first therapy with estrogens may be followed by a second remission with nafoxidine. In 3 patients estrogen receptors have been negative in new biopsy material after hormone treatment although negative results had been reported in previous tests. In these cases subjective remissions had been obtained with estrogens or androgens.
