Abstract

Jennifer F. Tseng, MD, MPHDivision of Surgical Oncology, Department of Surgery, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School,Boston, MAIn this issue of Annals of Surgical Oncology, Castleberryet al. publish an important manuscript analyzing the effectof use of vascular resection on perioperative outcomes afterpancreaticoduodenectomy. Their study, using the Ameri-can College of Surgeons National Surgical QualityImprovement Program (NSQIP) database, demonstratesthat 30-day outcomes for patients undergoing Whipple formalignant tumor at NSQIP hospitals are worse for patientsidentified as having Current Procedural Terminology(CPT) codes for direct repair of blood vessel or bypassgraft compared with those undergoing Whipple withoutsuch codes. This is the first large-scale study to study thisimportant topic. As the authors comment, the results of this study differfrom published results from large single-center series, inwhich comparable short- and long-term outcomes havebeen demonstrated after vascular resection at pancreatico-duodenectomy.
