Abstract

Winter sports have helped mountain development in France. These resorts have witnessed lean days during the mid-eighties for poor snow cover. This was a period when the white gold did not add to mountain economy. The situation has improved since 1991. Unlike Austrian village ski resorts, France has big sized winter tourism resorts which ask for better management, fulsome snow cover, besides respect for ecology. The paper discusses these problems in three parts: Resorts and the clientele, grouping of ski-areas and development and environment.
