Abstract

As can be derived from an inquiry conducted in Mannheim (HAFNER 1980), guest workers call upon the help of a psychiatrist by far less frequently than German of the corresponding age group. This can partly be attributed to the fact that there is a lower frequency of major psychiatric diseases, which ca be accounted for by the selection at the recruiting offices. On the other hand, a prospective study conducted among Turkish guest workers by HAFNER, MOSCHEL and OZEK (1977) reveals that there are in fact a great many cases of minor depressive states in connection with vegetative symptomatology: during the first 18 months after their arrival in Germany one third of the examined group was affected by such disturbances. This is an obvious indication that these people experience their social and mental difficulties largely as a physical suffering and consequently seek physical treatment.
