Abstract
As the neonates are strikingly different from the adults regarding anatomy and pysiology, many problems arise during anesthesia and postoperative period. In our hospital there are 100 beds and for surgery is only 8 beds. During the last 4 years 1820 pediatric subjects were operated out of which 102 were neonates. Some congenital abnormalities which are only in neonates, are not found in adults. Some neonates are extremely resistant to anesthesia but they stand the surgery fairly for a long period. Body weight, height, body surface area greatly differ from adults. Similarly respiratory system including larynx, trachea and thoracic cage are different type. Nervous system and kidney are poorly developed. Different types of operations are mentioned here. For pre-operative assessment, laboratory findings and X-ray as per need. Anemia and dehydrations are to be corrected. Induction of anaesthesia-and maintenance with or without endotracheal tube and positions of the patients are very important factors. Care for recording BP and pulse are to carefully noted. Optimum temperature of the theatre and post-operative room is very important. Positions of the patient with free airway and free movement of the chest, if required respiration is to be assisted. Difficulties met during few operations are mentioned.
