Abstract

Abstract Two Soviet specialists on northern development review the specific features of economic development in the northern areas of the USSR. The North is making significant contributions to the Soviet economy by improving the structure of the national fuels budget (through the development of northern oil and gas areas), by meeting the growing national requirements for some metals (nickel, copper, platinum‐group metals, gold and tin) and diamonds, and by helping resolve the problem of interbasin transfers of water resources (from north to south). Geographers are called upon to play a more active role in the planning of northern development, particularly in setting new operational standards for industry in northern areas and insuring an optimal system of northern resource use.
