Abstract

The discovery of joints, fissures and gulls during the constructi the A617 Pleasley by-pass through Magnesian Limestone in Derbyshi and the remedial measures taken are described in this paper. Joi sets occurring in this area are known to have been exacerbated by mining subsidence, chemical weathering and glacial activty. Site investigations for the project, carried out 16 years ago, did not reveal fissures, up to 0.5m in width, which were encountered duri construction. Normal joints, widened joints and fissures infille with Pleistocene or Recent deposits were found and these are desc in more detail. Rock Quality Designation values were recorded bu assessment of degree of fracturing was also required in the desig slopes. In the construction of the carriageway it was necessary cut back some fissures and gulls and fill them with sub-base mate graded limestone rubble, class 'E' concrete or in some cases reinforced concrete slabs. The remedial measures have proved successful in this case but the authors emphasise the unpredictab of the limestone.
