Abstract

Introduction This paper is addressed to one of the several methodological issues that must be resolved before studies of dream content can make use of narratives collected throughout the night by means of objective indicators of dreaming: are there changes in dream content from rapid eye movement (REM) period to REM period throughout the night? * If there are differences in content in the four to six REM periods of the night, the content analyst will be warned not to generalize about dream life on the basis of poorly-drawn samples. He will have to obtain narratives from every REM period. On the other hand, he may find that certain REM periods contain content more relevant to personality than do others.
