Abstract

AbstractConservation of the total energy and the total momenta in time‐stepping schemes for non‐linear 3D beams of the Reissner–Simo type is achieved via a particular treatment of large 3D rotations, which involves a rotational update using Cayley transformation, an interpolation of incremental tangent‐scaled rotations and a non‐linear update formula for angular velocities. In this note we investigate the side‐effects of this procedure. Copyright © 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
