Problems associated with the use of Cayley transform and tangent scaling for conserving energy and momenta in the Reissner–Simo beam theory

Abstract

AbstractConservation of the total energy and the total momenta in time‐stepping schemes for non‐linear 3D beams of the Reissner–Simo type is achieved via a particular treatment of large 3D rotations, which involves a rotational update using Cayley transformation, an interpolation of incremental tangent‐scaled rotations and a non‐linear update formula for angular velocities.
