Abstract

Calculations using the base model with a continuous current distribution have shown that in a simple single-layer winding with current, directed at an angle to the axis of the magnet, about 45°, mechanical stresses are several times smaller than the magnetic pressure of generated field. Experiments confirmed the sharp reduction of the winding deformation with the use of the azimuthal field for sustaining the winding balance. A real multiturn winding is weakened by the insulating gaps between the turns and is exposed to cross-component induction. The 3-D calculations have shown that the stresses in windings may be close to the calculated ones for the base model if the gaps are filled with a dielectric with high enough density modulus and because of the use of screens for field correction.
