Abstract

The Bhima ‘Seriess of Karnataka State, South India, occupies an area of ~ 4200 km 2 in the Gulburga District and is bounded by latitude 17° 14′ 00″ and longitude 77° 04′ 00″. The present paper deals with an abundant occurrence of fossil Chuaria circularis in the Lower Bhima shales. Much confusion prevails regarding the nomenclature of this fossil which had been reported elsewhere under different names. The type material Chuaria circularis has been augmented by Bhima material to provide nomenclatural stability and a sound basis for correlating different Late Proterozoic formations.
