Abstract

The article delves into the principles of the right to resistance in radical Presbyterian thought. As an example, the author discusses Samuel Rutherford’s political theology, which represents a consummation of the earlier concepts of tyranny and right to disobey that had been formulated largely within the Calvinistic camp. The theology in question became one of the chief arguments in support of the Puritan Revolution in England.

Introduction

Lud jest zarówno śmiertelny jako lud, ponieważ ,,jedno pokolenie odchodzi, a przychodzi następne”, lecz jako lud w przymierzu z Bogiem, w odniesieniu do ludu i Kościoła, choć śmiertelny w osobach, to zaprawdę, jako Kościół nie może umrzeć; lecz król, jako król może umrzeć i umiera. Zatem ostatecznie to Parlament jest ważniejszy od króla, który niejako jest agentem ludu i Boga, to bowiem on jest źródłem władzy króla, to on jest jego sędzią i dba o to, by władca nie zdegenerował się do tyrana. Istotą monarchii uświęconej przez Boga jest bowiem podleganie prawu, lecz prawo rozumie Rutherford w sposób właściwy dla jego teocentrycznego spojrzenia.
