Abstract

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic recurrent skin disease, and mostly occurs during infancy and childhood. Epidemiologic studies have found that the prevalence of AD has been greatly increasing in many countries in the past 30 years. The occurrence of AD is mainly related to skin barrier impairment, abnormality of immune function and changes of bacterial flora. Probiotics are live microorganisms, and appropriate probiotic supplementation is beneficial to the host. As a kind of immune modulator, their safety has been proved. In clinic, probiotics can be used for the treatment of inflammatory skin diseases, such as AD. Key words: Dermatitis, atopic; Microbial consortia; Immunomodulation; Prebiotics; Therapeutic uses
