Abstract
Multiphonon excitations in a number of nearly spherical nuclei have been investigated with the (n,n′γ) reaction. Quadrupole three-phonon quintets and candidates for members of the four-phonon octets have been identified in the Cd region. In addition, complete quadrupole–octupole quintets have been characterized in this region, and mixed-symmetry states in vibrational nuclei are now well known. Our best examples of two-phonon octupole states have also emerged in spherical nuclei, such as 208Pb.
