Abstract

We develop a practical method to accurately estimate the distribution of electrical current in optical communications systems in the presence of polarization mode dispersion (PMD)-induced intersymbol interference (ISI) and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. We then introduce an integrated coding and equalization scheme that use these estimated probabilities of the received current given a transmitted sequence. Simulation results with all-order PMD and ASE noise show the effectiveness of the scheme.
