Abstract
This synopsis attempts to draw attention to opportunities and challenges of PROMs for patient’s benefits. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are increasingly used to measure functional outcome and patient satisfaction especially as number of products seeks US-FDA approval to communicate patient benefits in their labelling and promotion. Information derived from these PROs are more relevant to patients to appreciate how therapy impacts their daily life and well-being than clinical endpoints or guidelines whose influence is difficult for them to correlate in their everyday quality life. Therefore it is imperative that such information must be based on scientifically valid results. PROMs are accepted to have ability to drive changes in the healthcare organization and deliver quality care to patient; however realization of this endeavor lies greatly in ensuring adaptation of PROMs by doctors. PROMs by collection and aggregation of data also help evaluate the quality offered by providers. Adapting PROMs allows better communication and decision making relating to patient satisfaction. Unfortunately, till date the use of PROMs is restricted to England, Sweden and parts of the US. Indian scenario reflects physician’s dependency more on disease-related outcome measures rather than PROMs with a similar approach to clinical studies implying heavily that concept of “patient centricity” is yet to be the DNA of Indian Healthcare set up. Challenges exist as physicians are often reluctant to use PROMs routinely for fear of increased workload. Physicians who spend time talking to patients do not feel need of additional information from them. Also advocating routine use of PROMs becomes challenging when outcomes in long-term use cannot necessarily be linked directly to healthcare interventions and patient benefit. In conclusion to realize the true benefit of PROMs for patient’s benefit, regulations should come in place to make them a part of clinical trials with uniform guidance document in place.
