Abstract

A recent article in Nature1 raised the question of how imbalance in gender representation in mathematics can be fixed, especially regarding the most prestigious prizes. For example, only one woman, Maryan Mirzakhani, has received the renowned Fields medal, which was inaugurated in 1936. However, this gender gap is not only an issue in mathematics. Meho2 found that of 141 international research prizes that were awarded 3445 times from 2001 to 2020, the pool of recipients had 2011 men and only 262 women.
