Abstract

There is generally a political outcry when the Government announces that, yet again, it is raising the NHS prescription charge. The debate is usually the same: on the one hand those that can afford drugs should make a contribution to their cost; on the other hand, the prescription charge undermines the principles of the NHS. But the debate should be widened to include access, equity, use, exemptions, government income from the charge, and privatization. This article looks at these issues with the aim of informing the wider debate.
