Abstract

Prevention and prosecution of crime is the province of the State, through its executive and judicial arms. In general, the Government is primarily responsible for prosecuting crime before the courts, and the participation of private citizens in the prosecution is typically through witness statements. Yet, this is not absolute. This paper briefly discusses certain provisions in the Criminal Procedure Code of India which enable private complainants to prosecute offences committed against them in tandem with the State machinery.
