Abstract

Fitness trackers are wearable devices that continuously record a wearer’s activity data. These have received a lot of attention in recent days. Fitness trackers predominantly use Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for communicating and synchronizing the collected data with user’s smartphone. The BLE communication can expose data to hackers and by combining this information with a profile of activities and interests online, this data becomes truly valuable. Thus, it is essential to ensure authenticity and integrity of data. This paper presents an analysis of possible privacy leakage for four fitness trackers using real BLE traffic traces collected in controlled experiments.
