Abstract

Chapter 2 delineates the various social and cultural forces that frame, and in many ways work against, young adults’ attempts to create stable and predictable adult lives. Whether bouncing from one temporary job to the next, dropping out of college because they can’t figure out how to fill out financial aid forms, relying on their credit card to survive, or joining the military out of desperation, working-class men and women feel bewildered and powerless as they come of age. For working-class young men and women, coming of age means coming to terms with the absence of choice.
