Abstract
This chapter begins with an overview of game theory. It is not intended to comprehensively look at the entire game theory field but does provide sufficient detail to understand how social dilemma games work. Indeed, the definitions are given in the context of social dilemma games. This overview is followed by a description of the three most widely studied games used in social dilemma investigations: the prison’s dilemma game, the public goods game (which is an N > 2 player version of prisoner’s dilemma), and the snowdrift game.
