Abstract

A dispersive optical system consisting of a grating and a prismatic beam expander is described and analysed. The function of the prism beam expander is to enhance significantly the dispersion of the grating. The application of the principle to a simple wavelength meter, suitable for pulsed and CW lasers, capable of resolving 0.01 nm at 568.8 nm is outlined.
