Abstract

<h2>Abstract</h2> There is no overall shortage of accommodation for short-term hospital patients. Many are admitted needlessly and many others are detained far longer than they should be. A shameful feature of the British medical scene is that many patients with chronic conditions remediable by surgery have to wait months or years for treatment. Yet endless effort and resources are largely wasted on other patients. Methods of ensuring that those in the greatest need of medical attention get it are considered.
