Abstract

This article presents the basic principles of the Acoustic Theory ofSpeech Production, also called Linear Source-filter Theory of SpeechProduction (FANT, 1960; KENT & READ, 1992; PICKETT, 1999).This description is justified since the theory is not available inPortuguese. This theory is useful in understanding articulatoryacousticrelationships. It may be applied to the analysis of a singlelanguage or in cross-linguistic studies. It also provides a foundationfor many procedures for the acoustic analysis of speech.
