The History Since 1970

At his home in Chicago on December 7, 1970, Dr Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar invited me to succeed him as Managing Editor (later retitled Editor-in-Chief) of The Astrophysical Journal. When no General Index appeared after volumes 125, 126, or 127, I phoned Chandrasekhar about them He said that he did not have the time to produce the manuscript. I was prepared for his response and replied “If I produced the manuscript Index, would the Press print it?” (I had already arranged for a half-time secretary, namely Eleanor Biggs, to help me). [We produced the manuscript for The Astronomical Journal General Index for 1944-1975.] So Chandrasekhar felt that I was a person with a conscience regarding The Journal Later we produced a General Index for Vol 146-165.
