Abstract
This book is a collection of presentations made at an international symposium entitled Principles of Cosmetics for the Dermatologist in Miami in 1980. The 49 contributors are of diverse backgrounds and include physicians, cosmetic chemists, biologists, and engineers. There are eight broad categories: soaps and shampoos, skin surface texture modifiers, deodorants and antiperspirants, fragrances, coloring agents, hair products, nail products, and sunscreens. Within them is a large body of valuable information about uses, formulation, and testing of cosmetics. Adverse reactions to cosmetics are considered, as are cosmetics for people with special requirements and the use of cosmetics in the management of dermatologic problems. The dermatologist who is looking for a brief, concise discussion of basic principles of cosmetics may be overwhelmed by the amount of information available in this book. The book in actuality is a basic reference work not only for dermatologists but for cosmetologists, cosmetic chemists, and others
