Abstract

Conservation professionals face a great challenge when inserting modern services into heritage buildings. This paper presents methodology for inserting heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) services into heritage buildings, including possible constraints. Principles considered are derived from contemporary conservation philosophy. Selected installation approaches are included, along with possible post-installation problems. The conclusion is that successful installation requires lateral thinking, an imaginative and innovative use of technology, and an appreciation of the opportunities each building presents. Conservation professionals must consider the impact of design decisions, and balance aesthetic factors with practicalities.
