Abstract

The experimental data on the absorption of plane polarized light by a solution of cattle rhodopsin at −196‡ C have been theoretically analysed to model the directional absorption properties of rhodopsin and prelumirhodopsin. It has been found that rhodopsin and prelumirhodopsin are planar absorbers having ratios of about 100∶7 and 100∶4, respectively, between the extinction coefficients along the long axis and perpendicular to it. These results support that the chromophore in prelumirhodopsin is more linear than the chromophore in rhodopsin.
