Abstract
ABSTRACT A new search in the far red for high-redshift objects is described. The technique employs prime-focus slitless spectroscopy with CCD and photographic detectors; the objective is to find evidence for either emission lines or continuum breaks in the first-order spectra. So far no convincing candidate has been found, although the sensitivity is good enough to reveal Lyman alpha at z approx. equal to 5 if the line were as bright as in typical QSOs observed at z equal to 2.5. The upper limits derived are useful for constraining models of galaxies in an early luminous phase.
