Abstract
Hydatid disease is caused by Echinococcus granulosus, endemic in cattle-raising and sheep-raising regions of the world, such as in the Middle East and Mediterranean countries, South America, New Zealand, and South Africa. Although hydatid disease is more common in liver and lung, it also affects the central nervous system. We present a case of spinal hydatid cyst, diagnosed by intraoperative imprint cytology. A 52-year-old male patient presented with back pain and urinary incontinency. On magnetic resonance imaging, a cystic mass in the T3 level of spinal cord was revealed. Intraoperative frozen section and imprint cytology were diagnostic of hydatid cyst. Therefore, cytology is a sensitive and rapid technique in diagnosis of hydatid cysts. The present case is unusual; however, with history of residence in endemic Middle Eastern area, spinal hydatidosis should be considered.
