Abstract

Several primary radiation products are trapped in dl-tartaric acid at 4.2 K. A primary reduction product and a primary oxidation product are identified by ESR–ENDOR spectroscopy in partially deuterated dl-tartaric acid. Hyperfine tensors were obtained for the β-hydrogen and 13C in the reduction product and for the α-hydrogen in the oxidation product. The oxidation product trapped at 4.2 K appears to be the decarboxylation radical before reorientation into the planar π orbital configuration.
