Abstract
This exploratory study tested the effectiveness of a cognitive-behavioral college course based on the stress inoculation training model. Targeting healthy adults, the course taught skills to manage anger, prevent anxiety and depression, and build self-esteem. Twelve participants, self-selected for interest in managing stress through application of mental health skills, were tested prior to and after the 15 week intervention. Analysis showed significant reductions in anxiety and depression, and significant improvements in self-esteem—which persisted at one-month follow-up. Results are discussed in the context of primary prevention of mental illness.
