Abstract

Low-pressure flowing afterglow experiments with Ne carrier gas have been performed to obtain the initial N 2(B) vibrational distributions and the N 2(B) formation rate constants for Xe( 3p 2) and Kr( 3p 2) excitation-transfer reactions to N 2. The N 2(C) formation rate constant for Ar( 3p 2) + N 2 also was measured. The results are consistent with a very specific interaction mechanism favoring only a few of the many available exit channels.
