Abstract

To the Editor:

In the article, “The Narcissistic-masochistic Character” (Psychiatric Annals. 2009;39(10):904–912), Arnold M. Cooper, MD, offers an interesting and worthwhile formulation of the narcissistic-masochistic character, a welcome and important contribution to the very important, yet long-neglected, study of masochism in human experience and psychopathology. However, it should be emphasized that Dr. Cooper’s formulation is one manifestation of masochistic character pathology among several, and is correctly named “narcissistic-masochistic,” because what he has described is how masochism can be employed in the service of maintaining a grandiose self in a person with primary narcissistic pathology.
