Abstract

Substantial deuterium isotope effects for the nitrosation of a range of aromatic and hetero-aromatic species show that decomposition of a Wheland-type intermediate is usually rate-limiting in aqueous acids, except for very reactive compounds when the reaction rates are encounter-controlled.
