Abstract

A survey using shareholders' contribution mechanism of primary health care financing was conducted in the Eastern part of Nigeria. The willingness of the shareholders in private and public corporations to offer a part or whole of their annual dividend in financing primary health care programme was assessed. The research design of the study is the randomized questionnaire distribution control to the shareholders of different classes involved in the study. It was ascertained that 70% of the respondents are willing to participate in primary health care financing. The degree of responsiveness in the percentage of dividend they were willing to offer ranged from 1–75% with 25 % attracting the largest response followed by 1–10%. Possible alternative methods of financing were determined and suggestions were made on how to incorporate the results of the study in the sustainability of the scheme.
